The Mirror of Death!

A unusual and cool, full-page final panel highlights this weird tale from the December 1952 one-shot issue of Diary of Horror! #1 from Avon Periodicals. I hope everyone enjoyed the posts this month, and thanks again to all the great suggestions and submissions-- lots more mayhem coming in May!

Oh, to see ourselves as others see us...
May that psychotic schmuck stay in the mirror forever!

Wow, did I love this savage little gem. The artwork from the unknown artists (unknown to me, anyway) was surprisingly fine! I thought it awesome when "the handsomest mug on the seven seas" blackjacks that poor society gal on the second page, snapping her head around. Man, the brutality of pre-code stuff can still surprise!

That's a great evil reflection -- the withered body, the trunk, the skull mouth and big ears, there was either a lot of thought into that or a lucky combination.

Also, the last pane the face of Struga showed great emotion. The art was fast but very skilled. I swear I've seen this art before, maybe on an Atlas artist.

At first glance the artwork on the first page reminded me of the short-lived, I think AdultSwim series, Minoriteam, which is itself retro. I would've guessed that style was more 60's or 70's. Anyway, just a thought.

I liked this story too. But this guy really was a special kind of jerk. I kind of understand those dudes who want to chisel the precious stones out of living idols and whatnot, but this guy takes the cake. He incurs the wrath of the exotic god for absolutely no reason at all, and in the process he kills a monk for telling him not to do the very thing that makes him angry when he does it anyway. It's kind of hard to believe he even made it this long, what with all the wet paint he must have eaten and all those dangerous electrical appliances he must have stuck forks into and all the rides he had to have thumbed from candy-bearing strangers.

This Diary of Horror cover is really awesome too. Totally creepy--like sixties Jack Kirby gone apocalyptic and dangerous.

Hi there, greetings from Japan. I'm mexican by the way, and a comic fan too. You have an impresive colection of your own. When I was a kid in the sixties there was a horror comic in Mexico fron the colony times. If you're interested here is the link http://tradicionesyleyendasdelacolonia.blogspot.jp/ My blog is called "comicdelnopal". Thank you.

I was thinking the same as Mr. Cavin. Lajos is so reckless, you'd think he'd already have died french-kissing a light socket or stealing food out of lions' mouths. I love how the last page breaks form for a unique and memorable closing shot.
